Birth Control Options

Today, in the 21st century of medicine and science, there are a lot of different birth control options. Unfortunately for women, the most modern and effective birth control options are almost all targeted towards females. Of course, there are plenty of older methods that are aimed at men as well. The oldest and most tried and tested birth control option is by way of using contraceptive devices. The most popular of these is still the condom. Condoms are a very simple concept that has been in use in one form or other since the time of the ancient Egyptians. There are also diaphragms, female condoms, and spermicidal foams that are sometimes used as well. The problem with contraceptive devices is that they all have a relatively high rate of failure, and are prone to misuse. If not used correctly, the rate of failure increases dramatically. Still, one or more of these methods used together can give a very low likelihood of pregnancy. More importantly, condoms also protective against many forms of sexually transmitted diseases (although not all!) and for this reason alone will probably remain popular for years to come. With respect to avoiding pregnancy as the goal (as opposed to disease) the more modern and most effective birth control options involved the use of hormone supplements for women. By taking a low amount of estrogen and progesterone during the right time of the menstrual cycle, women effectively trick their bodies into thinking that they are already pregnant. They are then therefore no longer able to get pregnant while taking the hormone supplements. Because being pregnant is a totally natural and not unhealthy condition, these hormone supplements are a birth control option that is generally not harmful, however they do have a number of side effects. The side effects vary from woman to woman, but can include weight gain, nausea, headaches, moodiness, and strange colored discharges. Most of these side effects are temporary and fade with continued use. Also, taking any of this form of birth control can increase your risk of heart disease, especially if you’re a smoker. Hormone supplements are becoming an extremely popular birth control option in industrialized countries. They are extremely effective, have a low margin for error, and are often even covered by health insurance. Birth control options today usually refers to what kind of hormone supplement to choose from, as there are different ways of administering the hormones now. You can take pills, use patches, or get an occasional injection. There are even types of birth control options that involve place hormone effusing devices within the body. Which birth control option is best for you is of course best discussed with your doctor.

Menstrual Cycle

Menstrual Cycle For every woman, the monthly menstrual cycle is a life event that was very much a mystery to us when it began. No matter how much information our mothers gave us, or how many health education class lectures we endured, we still didn’t know. Menstrual cycles are as unique as is every woman. Not every cycle is 28 days; menstruation can start on the 26th or 30th day too. Some women have erratic menstrual cycles and they never know when it will begin. The onset of menarche usually occurs anywhere from age 9 to age 17; all girls are different in heredity, weight, activity, diet, health, etc. and this all has an influence on when menstruation occurs for the first time. It is normal for it to be irregular and not come at a regular interval for the first few months. Flow may be very light and last only a couple of days at first, then three months may go by until another menstrual cycle begins. The cycle should become more regular as the months progress, and of course, a health care provider should be consulted if irregularity continues or heavy bleeding occurs. The menstrual cycle occurs as a result of an egg being released from an ovary once every 28 days or so. As it travels through the Fallopian tubes, it approaches the uterus, which has been building up cushiony lining for the fertilized egg to implant. If a sperm does not penetrate the egg in its travels, then the unfertilized egg continues from the Fallopian tubes on through the uterus and out as the lining of the uterus is shed during the menstrual cycle. If fertilization has occurred, the embryo will implant into the plump lining of the uterus where the cells will continue to divide forming a viable fetus. At this point in time, the menstrual cycle ceases until the pregnancy is brought to term or another event occurs which would cause the pregnancy to be terminated. Many women look forward to this time, because they get a break from having their monthly menstrual cycle and they get to experience pregnancy. If a woman’s menstrual cycle is irregular or there are other issues such as heavy bleeding, cramping, and/or prolonged cycles, options are available to regulate the cycle and control the uncomfortable symptoms that are being experienced. Most of the time, birth control pills are the first treatment option. Birth control pills are available in many different hormone combinations and strengths, and can be prescribed according to what type of menstrual cycle issue the patient is having. These pills are also fairly inexpensive making them accessible to all women. Our menstrual cycles do not have to take control of our lives. There are many options available for every unique woman. It is her choice to decide what is appropriate for her and her menstrual cycle. Ask your health care provider during your regular check ups about any questions or concerns you may have about your menstrual cycle.

Abortion Information

It's that taboo subject that makes parents across the world, shudder. How can you possible approach your children about sex? It just seems so awkward. This may be because no one schooled you regarding the birds and the bees; or it could simply be due to the fact that your kids roll their eyes every time you begin one of the classic parent-child speeches. While sex in general may be one of the most difficult things for human beings to converse about, the education aspect must be passed on to our youths. This will at least give them a leg to stand on when faced with grown-up decisions. These days it's important to educate our children on more than basic sexual relations. The modern day world we inhabit is loaded with bigger issues concerning STD's, unwanted pregnancy and abortion information. I have to admit that STD and abortion information are certainly in demand now days. If they're not, they very well should be. Now more than ever, far too many individuals are engaging in careless sexual activity. Unfortunately this leads to much larger problems than simple heartbreak. Thousands of people around the globe are infected by STDs on a regular basis. This is rather sad when it can easily be prevented. A much touchier factor of sex concerns abortion. At least in more modern times, kids across America are receiving abortion information in the classroom. It's mandatory that everyone understand the consequences of unwanted pregnancy and abortion. Regardless of your stand on the issue, it most likely isn't going anywhere. While I can certainly see some warranted cases for abortion, some individuals abuse the concept. I actually knew a young woman who resorted to abortion on two separate occasions. This is where the dilemma begins. There's a fine line when it comes to such an act. Abortion is necessary for some women in irregular circumstances, or simple if it is the more prudent route considering all aspects of the situation; however abortion should not be someone's method of birth control. Have you received and understood valid abortion information? If the answer is no, I suggest you delve into cyberspace for a deluge of data on abortion and STDs. Being informed and knowledgeable is the key to making good decisions. Abortion information is easy to come by these days if you just take a look. Be sure to educate your children on abortion as well.
