Aromatherapy in Pregnancy

Aromatherapy, or the uses of scents from various natural plant extracts, has been used for centuries in meditation, healing, healthcare, beauty and relaxation. The essential oils are the fragrant essences derived from flowers, leaves, barks, roots and berries. Each essential oil has its own therapeutic properties. Nowadays, aromatherapists, who are individuals essentially trained in how to combine and administer these essential oils, have emerged as complementary healers to the more traditional forms of allopathic medicine. The appeal of aromatherapy transcends cultures and continents, chiefly because it has proven to work. The ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans used aromatherapy in a wide range of uses – from embalming the dead to treating military soldiers injured in battle. Aromatherapy can be used to treat a wide range of ailments including first aid, stress related diseases and skin problems. Oils can be placed in aromatic baths, used in compresses, or mixed in creams, lotions or waters to help with the health of the skin. The various uses of aromatherapy in England and the US however, have been quite recent. Over the last decade, aromatherapy has become increasingly popular among the general public, used primarily in beauty and bath care for personal uses. Lavender, tea tree oil, clove, cinnamon, and other oils have been marketed for mass appeal for their healing and relaxation properties. These have been greatly diluted so that an individual will not become sensitive to an undiluted essence. Self-treatment with aromatherapy, however, should be exercised with caution. Properly used, essential oils are safe, but some oils present hazards that anyone using them should be aware of. I have purchased a number of oils off the shelves, only to find after further reading that these are hazardous and toxic in significantly small doses. There are no warning labels on aromatherapy oils, and if a service provider decides to sell them, people are free to buy and use them as they see fit. Babies, pregnant mothers and older adults need to be especially careful if they come in contact with essential oils. A properly trained aromatherapist will look beyond merely the application of essential oils, and will strive to treat the whole person to help achieve balance. As essential oils work on a subtle level, the multitude of healing properties they offer differ from synthetic drugs in this respect. They are not tailored to treat a specific symptom, but strive to rectify any imbalance in the body and promote better health and well-being. Aromatherapy has been likened to the Chinese idea of Yin and Yang- a harmonizing balance that exists with opposing energies. When balance is achieved, the person is in a state of health. I have used aromatherapy for over ten years, and have found the positive effects noteworthy. Primarily I have used oils to treat fatigue, combat stress and promote relaxation. When I travel, I often seek out essential oils that have been distilled in the country I am visiting, for these are usually of a purer and less expensive nature than ones that have been imported into the West. In Morocco, I have bought pure oils of jasmine, rose and neroli, some of the most expensive oils known. In Madagascar, I have bought ylang-ylang, clove, cinnamon, and other local oils that have excellent anti-viral and anti-bacterial oils that are perfect during travelling. Buying, experimenting and learning about aromatherapy oils are part of the enjoyment, and discovering their numerous health benefits through use is part of the reward.

Pregnancy Test

I still remember the day my wife found out that she was pregnant. We were returning home from a movie (coincidentally a movie about kids!) when on an impulse, my wife decided to purchase a home pregnancy test kit. We had been trying to start a family for quite some time and it was sheer coincidence that she chose that day to buy and use the pregnancy test kit. We came home, she went into the rest room to administer the test and we both sat and watched with glee as the two lines (indicating a positive test) materialized on the stick. The pregnancy test had worked, and confirmed her pregnancy and we would soon have our baby! But we wanted to be doubly sure and decided to read up on pregnancy tests. We were especially concerned about how accurate the results of such self administered tests were and whether these pregnancy tests were reliable at all. The information we found as comprehensive. Basically there are two kinds of pregnancy tests. First, there is the blood test (which cannot be done at home; you need the services of a healthcare facility or a trained healthcare services provider to get the results from this sort of a pregnancy test). The next, the one we had used, is the urine based home pregnancy test, which can be done in the safety and security of your home. In order to administer this test, the female places the test stick (or container in some cases) in her urine stream. Some variations of this pregnancy test may call for a few droplets of urine to be dropped into the test container. There is a short waiting period, and viola! The pregnancy (or the lack of it) is instantly revealed. The pregnancy test is able to do this because it seeks out a special hormone (the human chorionic gonadotropin or hCG) that the woman produces during her pregnancy. If the hormone is present in the urine stream, the woman is pregnant and the test is positive. If there is no discernable presence of the hormone, the woman is not pregnant and the test is negative. However, it so happens that if the pregnancy test is carried out very early, the body would not have started production of the hormone. Hence, at least two tests, spaced over a couple of weeks are advisable. Although most home pregnancy tests are considered to be at least 97% to 99% accurate, there are a number of things that can interfere with their results. Since pregnancy tests work by looking for signs of the pregnancy hormone, any drug that has sizable quantities of this hormone will vary the results of the pregnancy test. In such cases, you will have what is commonly known as a ‘false positive test’. This means that the pregnancy test will show you as being pregnant, although you are not. But there is still an element of surety attached to a negative test. Because even if you are using drugs that contain the pregnancy hormone (to treat cases like infertility) a negative test means no pregnancy. Most other over the counter drugs, antibiotics and even alcohol or other stimulants will not have any impact on the test results of a pregnancy test.

Baby Offers

It seems as if nearly everyone gets excited when a new born baby is expected in a family. Not only is the family anticipating the arrival, but friends and acquaintances are usually clamoring around to find out the details of the little bundle of joy. Now many businesses are getting into the excitement as well. These businesses have free baby offers available to new (and not-so-new) parents. One of my favorite baby offers is through Enfamil Family Beginnings. This program is wonderful for anyone expecting a child even mothers who are planning to breastfeed their babies. The Enfamil Family Beginnings program is a must for expectant mothers because there are so many benefits to joining. I knew that I was going to breastfeed my daughter but I wasn’t sure for how long and I wasn’t sure whether or not I was going to supplement the breastfeeding with formula. Even though I figured that formula was out of the question I still decided to sign up for baby offers through Enfamil. I was so glad that I did. The Enfamil program sent me valuable information about feeding an infant. The helpful suggestions spanned from birth to the toddler years. I also received a large diaper bag and a small diaper bag through the baby offers. Both of the bags are very sturdy and they have taken a lot of punishment. The program also involved several hearty shipments of free formula. This was wonderful because I wasn’t sure if the baby would take to formula. She didn’t. However, the many samples were well received by a local family who was in need. I couldn’t use the formula but someone else could. Another favorite of mine among the baby offers is the free subscription to American Baby Magazine. This useful magazine was sent to my home for one entire year free of charge. The beauty of this offer is the company does not hassle you at all. There are no phone calls and no emails harassing you to subscribe. Because of this, I got a subscription. I also subscribed because it is simply a wonderful magazine for parents. Speaking of valuable reading material, State Farm offers a free copy of the Mayo Clinic’s book about pregnancy. The book is massive, weighing about three pounds and it is a comprehensive medical resource that all parents could use. There are a plethora of other free baby offers available on the Internet. With a little research you can find a lot of freebies for your little one.

Henna Design in Pregnancy

Henna design is often thought of as a safe and temporary alternative to tattooing. Unless removed through long and painful procedures, tattoos are permanent skin decorations. Those who wish to have body art for a special occasion or perhaps want to experiment without branding themselves permanently often turn to henna design. But this type of body art is much more than a temporary way to participate in the tattoo revival that has occurred in recent years. Body enhancement using henna design has been around for years. In fact, it has played and continues to be a part of various customs and ceremonies in many cultures throughout the world. In some cultures, henna has also historically been applied for spiritual or healing purposes. Some say the use of henna originated in India, while others claim that it began in The Middle East or North Africa. Tattooing of the hands and feet with henna as part of spiritual or death rituals has been fairly commonplace in many cultures. In many areas, henna design is used as a body decoration for brides, newly engaged individuals and pregnant women, just to name a few. It has been much more than a way of body enhancement in many regions. One of the reasons it has played such a heavy part in the spiriAtuality and celebrations of many cultures is that henna is not only very safe to the skin, but actually contains soothing, cooling and healing properties. Essentially a form of temporary tattooing, it is done without piercing the skin. Henna dyes the skin when it is applied, so it is obviously much less painful than permanent tattooing. A henna design can last on the skin for a time period ranging from as few as three to as many as eight or more days, depending on the thickness of the skin where the henna is applied. Because it is temporary, painless, artistic, and steeped in cultural traditions, henna design has enjoyed a recent revival in popular culture. Many celebrities have experimented with it, and it has gained popularity with Westerners of all ages. Many opt for the traditional art of mehndi, or the henna tattooing of the hands and feet. But henna design can be found in as many styles and varieties as other types of tattoos. For some, the practice holds deep cultural and religious significance. For others, it is a safe, fun and creative way to experiment with self-expression through body modification. Unlike many other cultural traditions, henna design shows no signs of fading into history, but is in fact likely to become even more common.

Planning a Baby Shower

My niece is pregnant with her first baby. We have always been close so I let her know that I would help her with any thing she needed help with in getting ready for the baby. There are many things to do in getting ready for a baby. We needed to prepare a room for the baby as well as purchase items that are needed when adding a baby into the home. I told my niece that I wanted to have a shower for her and her husband. I encouraged her to register at a number of local department stores for things that were needed for the baby. Planning a baby shower takes some time. The major time factor was coordinating things with my niece. In planning a baby shower I wanted to make sure that I was including everyone that she wanted to invite. I was taking extra care in this because when my sister had a baby shower for a friend she had invited people that the mother to be did not want at the shower. This made for an uncomfortable time for everyone. The other part of planning a baby shower that is difficult is deciding when the shower is to take place. My niece wanted to wait until after the baby arrived so that the people attending the shower could see the baby. This was fine, except that some of the items on her gift register were for things that are needed as soon as the baby arrives home. My niece mentioned that one of her co-workers was also planning a baby shower for her. I got the name of the co-worker so that we could coordinate the two baby showers to best fit with my niece’s wishes. When I spoke with the co-worker planning a baby shower I found out that she was planning on having the shower the last day my niece was scheduled to work before the beginning of her maternity leave. I explained that I was planning to have a shower after the birth of the baby. We decided that we would tell the guests this so they could pick out their gifts accordingly. I would be including relatives and she would include co-workers, so people would not be invited to two showers. When planning a baby shower you can get cards from the department stores where the mother has registered to place in the shower invitations. Having these cards to insert cuts down on the amount of information you need to write on the invitations. Planning a baby shower should include as much input from the new parents as possible. Try to include the new dad also so he is not feeling left out of the process. The baby shower should concentrate on celebrating the new life of a child.
