Birth Control Options

Today, in the 21st century of medicine and science, there are a lot of different birth control options. Unfortunately for women, the most modern and effective birth control options are almost all targeted towards females. Of course, there are plenty of older methods that are aimed at men as well. The oldest and most tried and tested birth control option is by way of using contraceptive devices. The most popular of these is still the condom. Condoms are a very simple concept that has been in use in one form or other since the time of the ancient Egyptians. There are also diaphragms, female condoms, and spermicidal foams that are sometimes used as well. The problem with contraceptive devices is that they all have a relatively high rate of failure, and are prone to misuse. If not used correctly, the rate of failure increases dramatically. Still, one or more of these methods used together can give a very low likelihood of pregnancy. More importantly, condoms also protective against many forms of sexually transmitted diseases (although not all!) and for this reason alone will probably remain popular for years to come. With respect to avoiding pregnancy as the goal (as opposed to disease) the more modern and most effective birth control options involved the use of hormone supplements for women. By taking a low amount of estrogen and progesterone during the right time of the menstrual cycle, women effectively trick their bodies into thinking that they are already pregnant. They are then therefore no longer able to get pregnant while taking the hormone supplements. Because being pregnant is a totally natural and not unhealthy condition, these hormone supplements are a birth control option that is generally not harmful, however they do have a number of side effects. The side effects vary from woman to woman, but can include weight gain, nausea, headaches, moodiness, and strange colored discharges. Most of these side effects are temporary and fade with continued use. Also, taking any of this form of birth control can increase your risk of heart disease, especially if you’re a smoker. Hormone supplements are becoming an extremely popular birth control option in industrialized countries. They are extremely effective, have a low margin for error, and are often even covered by health insurance. Birth control options today usually refers to what kind of hormone supplement to choose from, as there are different ways of administering the hormones now. You can take pills, use patches, or get an occasional injection. There are even types of birth control options that involve place hormone effusing devices within the body. Which birth control option is best for you is of course best discussed with your doctor.

Baby Picture Frames

Baby picture frames are very important items for any family who has children. Of course parents love to show off their little ones as much as possible and the right framing can make the difference between a good snapshot and a photographic masterpiece. There are tons of options when it comes to finding the right frame for the little tykes but one brand stands out. Images by Ellen offers unique baby picture frames that are designed especially for baby’s first picture. By first picture, I mean the infant’s sonogram or ultrasound image that most parents receive during a checkup when the mother is about eighteen months pregnant. This is truly the infant’s first picture. I loved the ultrasound images of my daughter. She was very active and the nurse suggested that we get a lot of sleep while we could. Our daughter squirmed around so much that the nurse had great opportunity to catch some really cute images of her while she was rolling around. One of the images appeared to be a snapshot of our daughter waving to us. This is my absolute favorite of the ultrasound images and I wanted to frame it. Unfortunately, I looked through a vast number of baby picture frames to no avail. None were the right size or shape to suit our baby’s very first snapshots. I decided to let my friend, the Internet, intervene and I was not disappointed. In no time at all I found Images by Ellyn. This company produces baby picture frames designed specifically for ultrasound images. After just a few clicks and one tough decision, I was on my way to receiving a keepsake that I will treasure always. The baby picture frames are constructed of wood. They are durable and they suit any décor. The sonogram image is protected by a special backing and a glass surface on the face of the image and the opening of the frame is the perfect size for a sonogram image. You don’t need to crop or enlarge the ultrasound print to accommodate these baby picture frames. The only thing that was difficult about the task was deciding which words to choose for the item. There are a number of sentimental statements that are available for the baby picture frames. The little note of sentiment is the perfect touch for the keepsake. I will always cherish my baby’s very first photo.

Patchwork Quilt

My grandmother and mother are both quilters. I love looking at the works of art that each have created over the years. My sister and I decided that we would like to learn how to quilt to keep this tradition alive in the family. Our mother makes very elaborate appliqué quilts. We knew that we did not want to start with something that complicated. We went to a fabric store together to find quilting patterns for beginners. The sales clerk suggested that we start with a patchwork quilt. This would be less difficult and also less expensive. A patchwork quilt consists on different fabrics cut into pieces and sewed together to create the quilt top. A coordinating solid or print fabric is used for the back of the quilt and a batting is placed in between. The top and back are then quilted together through hand sewing with thread, or by tying knots through all the layers with pieces of yarn. That process is known as tying a quilt. Each patchwork quilt is different because the quilter decides if each piece of fabric will be the same size and shape and also how to arrange the pieces. The clerk suggested using the same size squares of each fabric and to alternate the fabrics to create a sequence in the colors. As people get more involved in quilting they can create designs and patterns in the patchwork quilt by the placement of the colored fabrics. I decided that I would make the patchwork quilt for the bed in our guest room. I wanted jewel tones for this room. I chose three solid colors and three coordinating patterns. I found a striped fabric that featured all of the colors to use for the back of the patchwork quilt. My sister’s daughter is pregnant so she decided to make a baby quilt. She bought pastel colored solids and prints that had animals on them. I like the look of hand stitched quilts so I new that I wanted to quilt my patchwork quilt by hand. I did not want to attempt an elaborate pattern for my first project so I decided to cut my different fabrics in six inch squares. Once I cut out my squares I arranged the squares alternating solids and patterns. I sewed the squares together and then pinned the top, bottom and filling together. With chalk I placed as X in each square. I then hand stitched the outline of the square and the X. I used an embroidery hoop to hold the fabric taunt while I sewed. I then used a solid color binding to complete the edging. My first patchwork quilt is not perfect, but I enjoyed doing the project and look forward to making another one.

Baby Time Capsule

Anyone who has children will tell you that time slips away so quickly that it will make your head spin. One minute you have an infant and the next minute you are getting ready for your child’s first day in school. With one precious moment sweeping past after another you want to capture as many memories along the way. A baby time capsule can help you keep a collection of items that will evoke wonderful memories for you and your child. Many of us rely on our memories way too much. I kept a baby time capsule for my daughter during her first year of life. There were some objects that I collected while I was pregnant and others I collected during the first 12 months after her birth. One item I wanted to add to the baby time capture was a cute little ducky outfit. When I opened the baby time capsule I was surprised by how many things I had forgotten in so little time. My daughter just hit her 18th month when I opened the memory box and I had already started to get sentimental over the items I had collected. There were many items I had completely forgotten about as well. The amazing thing is that I often wonder how on earth I could forget about her favorite ball or her favorite hat. These items that were placed in the baby time capsule held such value for us when they were being used. How could these things be forgotten so easily so quickly? After the experience of forgetting about some of the sentimental items found in the relatively new baby time capsule I decided that I would take the process one step further. I have my daughter’s baby time capsule from her first year but I also have a few notes added to the objects to make the memories stronger. I also thought that this would be a great way to share the memories of our daughter’s first year after she is married and ready to start a family of her own. We are going to save her baby time capsule to open when she is carrying her first child. This will be a great thing to share during her baby shower. Creating the baby time capsule has been a pure joy for me and my husband. One day we will share the memories with our daughter on a very special occasion. At the rate moments are buzzing by that special occasion may come sooner than we think.

Infertility Treatments

Infertility Treatments Many couples find themselves seeking infertility treatments because they have not been able to get pregnant within a reasonable amount of time on their own, usually considered to be a year or more of unprotected sex. Infertility treatments have become more progressive over past years, and have resulted in successful outcomes for couples desiring to have children. It may take more than one attempt in many cases, which can run into tens of thousands of dollars for some couples, if insurance coverage is not available. Only a handful of states across the nation require health insurance carriers to cover infertility treatments, leaving couples who want to have a baby having to finance the whole expense. For such as in vitro fertilization (IVF) or gamete intra-fallopian transfer (GIFT), this could be as much as $8–10,000 each attempt. Some couples even take out second mortgages on their homes to provide the funds to pay for infertility treatments. When couples first decide to consult a professional for infertility treatment, there are many questions that they want answers to right away; they want to know who has the problem. These concerns can usually be addressed quite easily with a few simple tests. Women may simply have a hormone imbalance that affects her chances of getting pregnant, which can easily checked and treated. The first thing checked from the male partner is the sperm assay, to make sure that enough are being produced. If the count is low the chance of the sperm penetrating the egg is decreased. Further evaluation of both partners will be needed if nothing is found with the initial testing, at which time the couple will probably be referred to an infertility specialist. Treatment for infertility does not have to involve complicated technical procedures, and in many cases can be resolved with hormone treatments and/or surgery. If couples do proceed with more extensive infertility treatment, they should take the time to research the infertility clinic, the reproductive endocrinologists on staff, that clinic’s success rates for various procedures and how much they cost, what insurance plans they accept, and what services are included and not included for the quoted cost. Infertility treatments usually are based on the couple completing one cycle from beginning to end, but of course can vary depending on each individual case. Many couples find success with infertility treatments, and though results are not guaranteed, it is an option that is available. Infertility treatments are the answer to many couples’ dreams, to have a child of their own, no matter the cost, whatever it takes.
